Will Precious win “Best Film of 2009” at the Golden Globe Awards Show?”
Will Gabourey Sidibe’s gut-wrenching performance as “Precious” or Mo’Nique’s electrifying performance as Mary earn her an Academy Award at the 2010 Oscars? Stay tuned.
This is awards season folks and the movie “Precious” is a strong contender for a gold statuette. The movie has already earned a 2010 Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture Drama. While newcomer Gabourey Sidibe and actress, comedianne, and talkshow host Mo’Nique have produced critically acclaimed performances, thus earning them Golden Globe award nominations for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture Drama respectively, they do face heavy competition. While we wait and see if "Precious" will win Golden Globes in all three categories and whether the picture, their performances and the cast will get nominated for Oscars, there's no doubt they deserve them. Usually, whoever wins a Golden Globe award goes on to win an Academy Award at the Oscars. The Oscars sometimes mimick the Golden Globe. The Golden Globes will air on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. on NBC.Since 1939 to present, less than 15 African Americans have won the coveted Oscar. When an actor or film wins an Oscar, more acting or directing gigs become available to the individual along with more money and recognition. Whether or not "Precious" wins, Director Lee Daniels, the cast, and crew have created a body of work that's unforgettable because it's a universal story. Thanks to Oprah and Tyler Perry presenting the movie, more audiences now know about it.

For Best Film – Drama category, Precious is up against “Up in the Air”, The Hurt Locker, Avatar and Inglorious Basterds. In the Best Actress – Drama category, 26-year-old Gabourey Sidibe faces off against Carey Mulligan, “An Education”; Emily Blount, “The Young Victoria”; Helen Mirren, “The Last Station”; and Sandra Bullock, “The Blind Side.”In the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama category, Mo'Nique competes against Penelope Cruz, “Nine”; Vera Farmiga, “Up in the Air”; Anna Kendrick, “Up in the Air”; and Julianne Moore, “A Single Man.” “Precious” is based on “Push” a novel by Sapphire. The movie examines the relationship between an overweight, struggling, teenage mother who experiences sexual abuse from her father and physical and emotional abuse from her mother. The adversities she faces encourages her to want more out of life. Through her new found self-worth and the people she encounters along her journey, Precious finds love, help and the strength to move forward in life.

“The Princess and the Frog”, which is Disney’s first African American fairy tale princess, was nominated for a Golden Globe award in the Best Animated Film category. “Dreamgirls” actress and Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose stars as 19-year-old Tiana, a beautiful young girl who dreams and sets out to open her own New Orleans restaurant. Along the way she meets Prince Naveen a frog who wants to be human again. One kiss from Prince Naveen turns her world up-side-down in this musical about self-discovery and what’s important in life. The movie stars Bruno Campos, Terrence Howard, Oprah Winfrey, John Goodman, and Jenifer Lewis.
Another noteworthy actress up for a Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Drama is Sandra Bullock in “The Blind Side.” This is the real life story of African American NFL player Michael Oher as a homeless and traumatized teenager who meets a wealthy Caucasian woman named Leigh Ann Tuohy played by Bullock. Tuohy and her caring family adopt Oher and provide a stable support system which helps him to reach his potential and grow as a student, player, and human being. While Oher faces challenges and is helped to cope with them, the Tuohy’s are also transformed by this new family member to reach their potential too.
