Oscar nominated and burning up the Hollywood scene, Taraji P. Henson is now the star of Tyler Perry's newest, soon-to-be hit I Can Do Bad All By Myself.
Ms. Henson takes on the role of the alcohol striken, "didn't-ask-for-this" adoptive parent that's mad at the world. But as Ms. Henson puts it, a huge transformation occurs of couse, with the help of Madea...so get ready to laugh your butt off.
We sat down with Ms. Henson and chatted with her about the new movie, her role, and relationships. Check it out!
Ms. Danyale Brown (DB): What did you like most about playing April in Tyler Perry’s “I Can Do Bad All By Myself”? What similarities do you think you share most?
Ms. Taraji P. Henson (TPH): I always love going to Atlanta and working with Tyler’s incredible crew. Tyler called me the day after the Academy Awards to talk to me about the character April and I jumped at the chance to play this girl who learns to transform her life with the help of some other amazing characters. April is spirited, stubborn and feels things to the core. That part of her is just like me.
DB: What inspirations did you have to draw on to capture the role of April?
TPH: The inspiration for April came from all the people I’ve met in my life who have changed their course.
DB: Tyler Perry is famous for his wacky antics on stage and behind the camera, how did his presence affect the mood of the filming process?
TPH: Tyler Perry is a constant professional. He moves quickly and knows exactly what he wants. He has a keen eye and is so great to work with because as a director, he is also an actor.
DB: Are you currently dating?
TPH: I’m not currently dating, but everyone knows I’m available because I mentioned it in a recent issue of Men’s Fitness!
DB: When you’re in a relationship, what is one rule of thumb that you always go by?
TPH: I look for a man, not a mama’s boy. A man who knows God, who is extremely responsible, who knows unconditional love, who loves to dance and laugh... A man who loves life!
DB: If you could say anything to young women about men and relationships, what would you advise them on?
TPH: I would advise young women to learn to love and take care of SELF FIRST! You have to teach not only men, but the people around you how to love you. Only you know what makes you happy. Never leave the responsibility of your happiness in someone else's hands. Only you are responsible for your happiness. Whatever the situation, YOU have the power to change YOUR course.
DB: Who would you say is your favorite designer hanging in your closet right now?
TPH: It’s too hard to pick just one. I recently shopped at Gucci and I will always love Roberto Cavalli because of my Academy Awards dress. I wore Kaufman Franco to the BET awards and I won so that’s a good luck designer for me! They mix fashion forward styles with classic silhouettes. But I don’t choose because of the designer, it’s all about the fit.
